Applicants must be in possession of:

  1. a Bachelor degree with at least Second Class (Honours) from the University of Malta or from any other higher education institution recognised by Senate, in an area of study deemed suitable by the Board of the Institute or
  2. a Bachelor degree with Third Class (Honours) or Category III in an area of study deemed suitable by the Board of the Institute, provided such applicants are in possession of other qualifications, including relevant experience, obtained following the first cycle degree.

In exceptional cases the Admissions Board, on the recommendation of the Board of the Institute, may admit into the Course applicants not in possession of a first cycle degree, if it is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of other academic or professional qualifications and a minimum of five years' experience in teaching or coaching, that together are deemed to be comparable to the qualifications indicated above. Such qualifications and experience shall be evaluated in accordance with the procedures established by the University Policy for the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning.

The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 15 students.

This programme of study provides you with the opportunity to examine, critically analyse, and evaluate the role of physical education and sport in contemporary society. The course aims to provide you with theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of Research Methods specific to the areas of Physical Education and Sport. The dissertation component will provide you with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge of conducting research into practice, enabling you to understand and apply practitioner research. Aspects such as leadership in the area of sport and physical education will be delved into and analysed. Continuous engagement in various professional development opportunities, coupled with ongoing reflection and analysis of professional practice and relevant scientific literature will develop your understanding of aspects directly related to the fields of Physical Education and Sport.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science in Physical Education and Sport - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Institute for Physical Education and Sport.

By the end of the Postgraduate Certificate programme you will be able to:

  • Analyse the role of exercise, sport and physical activity on the developing child's body;
  • Critically engage in the promotion of physical activity in contemporary society;
  • Understand curriculum design and the role of physical education as a vehicle for ongoing holistic development.
  • Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of various issues covered during the course of studies through assignments, examinations, projects, oral and visual presentations analysis reports, reflective accounts, as well as through a final project (dissertation).
  • Amalgamate theoretical knowledge to experiential knowledge within the fields of Physical Education and Sport.
  • Examine the philosophy behind physical education teaching and learning, as well as the challenges and impact of students’ learning in physical education.
